Water
reservoir at Kotri Barrage depletes
KOTRI-Water reservoir height at Kotri Barrage at the River
Indus is depleting day by day posing a danger of creating a
potable water crisis in supply lines to Karachi as well.
According to details, as a result of acute water shortage in
the River Indus from Jamshoro to Kotri and Thatta it has
transformed into numerous small ponds at places. The water
discharge position at Kotri Barrage is less than 20% due to
which it may cause water crisis in Karachi.
Water stored at Kotri / Jamshoro for long has become stagnant,
blackish in colour and emitting bad odour becoming harmful for
human consumption and causing diseases like cholera, diarrhoea,
gout and other diseases.
The standing crops in Dadu and Thatta districts have dried up
because of acute shortage of water in the River Indus
compelling fishermen to anchor their boats on the bank since
catch of fish and
prawns is not possible in the present position. Most of them
have shifted to other places.
