20,000 acre brought under fish culture
LAHORE-With the technical assistance of Fisheries Department
Punjab, as many as 20 thousand acre of land have been brought
under fish culture in the province, while 53 thousand matric
ton of fish were produced during the last fiscal year.
This was disclosed by the director general fisheries Punjab,
Dr. Mohammed Ayub, while briefing the advisor to President of
Pakistan on food agriculture and livestock Mohammed Shafi Niaz
at fish seed hatchery today. Secretary forestry wildlife
fisheries Punjab, Shahid Hussain Raja and other high ranking
officers also attended the
briefing.
The advisor to President of Pakistan was informed that
diagnostic laboratory and soil and water testing unit would be
set up in Islamabad hatchery during the current fiscal year.
Director general fisheries told the participants that in order
to save endangered
fish species like Mahaseer and Kalban from extinction, a
project has been started.
It was also informed that seed of different indigenous and
exotic fish varieties like rahu, mori, theilla, silver carp,
grass carp gulfam and big head was being produced in the
hatcheries of department and last year 62 million seed was
produced.
Sharif Niaz later visited the Islamabad seed hatchery and
nursery units Hattian district Attock, where he was briefed
about the fish seed stocking campaign and other matter related
to hatchery management.
