Plan to provide water to cotton crop

LAHORE-Alternate arrangements are being made on war footing basis to supply canal water to Rajanpur and Rojhan areas for avoiding damage to standing cotton crop.

This was stated by Khurshid Zaman Qureshi, provincial Minister for Agriculture & Cooperatives while presiding over the meeting of Cotton Crop Management Group at Multan on August 30. The Minister said that cotton crop of Rajanpur and Rojhan areas was threatened due to disruption in canal water flow caused by breaches in the DG Khan canal by recent hill torrents.
To ensure irrigation to these areas, water will be released in Qadra Canal through Qadra Creak directly from Sindh river for Rojhan area and from Link-lII canal to Kutab Dundee system for Rajanpur area.

While releasing the water preference will to given to brackish water zones as in sweet water zones water could be supplemented to some extent with tubewells. The Minister said that these arrangements will be completed within the next week adding that water supply to Dajal canal had already been restored.

Referring to the plant protection of cotton, the Minister said that there was no scarcity of pesticides and were available at reasonable prices. If there are complaints of over-charging by dealers the affected farmers should bring these to the notice of local agriculture extension staff.
