20 Mega Projects to
help create jobs in rural areas
ISLAMABAD-Twenty mega projects which were launched recently
will create
about one millions jobs besides big economic activity in the
country.
According to official sources Gomal Zam Dam, Mirani Dam,
Greater Thal Canal, Right Bank Outfall Drain (RBOD), Mekran
Coastal Highway, Chashma Right Bank Canal, ongoing Quetta
Water Supply Project and three main roads in the Northern
Areas and construction of Turbat-Mand Road will create about
one million jobs. The sources said that other development
projects whose feasibility reports are in finalization process
to be launched soon will also boost economy and generate more
jobs.
The sources said the projects include Katchhi canal in
Baluchistan, Rainy canal in Sindh and raising of Mangla Dam's
level by 40 feet, Karachi water supply scheme, Northern bypass
and Lyari Expressway, as well as construction of M-3 and M-4
sections of motorway, Gwadar- Turbat road providing linkage to
Karachi market. He said "this nation-building endeavour will
usher the country into a new era of rapid development and
uplift,". He said Quetta Water Supply and Environment
Improvement project work will cost Rs. Six billion.
He said the main objective to launch this project is to solve
chronic water shortage problem in the city. He said three mega
projects Mirani dam some fifty km south west of Turbat town
will cost around 118 million dollars and when completed,
irrigate 32000 acres of land. He said another big project,
Turbat-Mand Road which will cost Rs 391.7 million will
generate thousands of job opportunities in the area. He said
Gwadar-Pasni section of the coastal highway is under
construction from Lyari and Liari-Ormara and Gwadar-Pasni
sections of the coastal highway will cost Rs eight billion.
The estimated cost of the entire length of 753 km, is Rs 15
billion to be completed in three phases. He said "the fast
track development projects are to be completed within the next
three to five years," he added. He said Kuwait has promised to
extend $ 300 million to Pakistan for undertaking some mega
projects, including the greater karachi and Quetta water
supply schemes. For this project besides Kuwait, the
governments of China, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and
Oman had decided to offer $ 250 million, $200 million, $ 268
million and $ 100 million respectively.
