Wine Competition Annual

SOUTH AFRICA, REPUBLIC OF, June 14, 2002 -- South Africa's 2002 wine grape harvest is estimated at 1.06 million tons, a 9% increase from last year, though smaller than the average crop over the past 5 years. Wine production is also estimated to increase 9% to about 810 million litres, at an average recovery of 760 litres of wine a ton of grapes. South Africa's wine exports jumped 20% in 2001, and further increases are expected in 2002. The long awaited South Africa-EU Agreement was finally signed on January 2002, following resolved issues on intellectual property rights. However, the EU recently imposed restriction on South Africa's use of certain labeling terms ( e.g. ‘Tawny' and ‘Ruby').

SYRIA, June 14, 2002 -- Syria's 2001/2002 cotton crop is estimated by the Cotton Bureau at 1,010,000 tons of seed cotton grown on 257,000 hectares. Lint production is estimated at 348,000 tons. Total domestic lint consumption is estimated at 120,000 tons. The balance of about 228,000 tons is to be exported.

U.S. Captures 38% Share in the 1st SBS Rice Tender

JAPAN, June 14, 2002 -- On May 31 the Food Agency (FA) of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) conducted its first Simultaneous Buy and Sell (SBS) rice tender Japanese Fiscal Year 2002 (April 2002 - March 2003). A total of 14,680 metric tons of foreign rice was contracted (12,180 tons for table rice and 2,500 tons for broken rice for processing). China and the United States were the largest suppliers with China securing 5,974 metric tons, or 40.7 percent share, and the United States accounting for 5,642 metric tons, or 38.4 percent share.

PORTUGAL, June 13, 2002 -- A slowdown in Portuguese total textiles manufacturing is expected to depress national 2001/02 and 2002/03 raw cotton imports down to forecasted 110,000 Mt and 100,000 Mt. The turmoil currently affecting the local textiles industry is also negatively affecting raw cotton imports from the U.S., which presently consist in small quantities of PIMA cotton. A recovery in sales is anticipated for the medium-term, after the current industry re-structure is complete. 1 USD = 1.08 EUROs.

Nitrofen Found in Organic Livestock Products and Feeds

GERMANY, June 13, 2002 -- Residues of the banned herbicide Nitrofen were found in organic livestock products and organic feeds in Germany. Although parts of the organic industry had knowledge about the contamination, notification of government authorities was delayed by several months. House of Commons Agriculture Committee

CANADA, June 18, 2002 -- The Standing Committee on Agriculture and Agri-Food, after extensive consultations with the Canadian agriculture industry, made a number of sweeping recommendations that would better equip Canadian producers to face its current challenges and embrace new opportunities. Of the 33 recommendations made, one called for the Canadian Wheat Board to authorize on a trial basis, a free market for wheat and barley. The CWB expressed "shock and dismay" at the recommendation.

GERMANY, June 17, 2002 -- No additional Nitrofen contamination sources have been detected. However, a small amount of contaminated grain (72 tons of wheat) ended up in the conventional feed. Marginal Impact of Rotational Subsidy in 2002

FRANCE, June 19, 2002 -- The European Commission recently approved a new subsidy program called "rotational subsidy" for farmers. Consequently, French farmers can now benefit from this new agri-environmental subsidy, which aims to favor growers who diversify their plantings under a five-year contract. Although they believe the rotational subsidy will favor oilseed plantings, French oilseed growers recently reported numerous problems that they are facing to put in place this new support system. As a result, the area benefitting from the rotational subsidy in 2002 is relatively marginal at present.

Ottawa Expected to Make Ag Funding Announcement Soon

CANADA, June 19, 2002 -- Canadian officials and trade sources indicate that the Canadian government is close to unveiling a multi-billion dollar farm aid package that some in the industry expect to be worth close to C$5.2 billion. The funding is expected to ease Canadian farmers' financial hardships in the face of what is being characterized as a "global subsidy war." However, the president of one of Canada's major agricultural lobby groups cautioned that current figures in the media are only rumored estimates and not carved in stone. TAIWAN, June 21, 2002 -- As of mid-June 2002, the U.S. had an unprecedented 60 percent of the cotton market with total exports of more than 700,000 bales. However, Taiwan's total MY01/02 cotton imports are not expected to return to earlier levels because of high stocks and the slow decline in Taiwan's textile industry. By 2003, imports should recover slightly as Taiwan's stocks fall. In the years to come, cotton imports are expected to shrink as Taiwan's textile industry contracts and moves overseas.

UNITED KINGDOM, June 21, 2002 -- CY2002 UK asparagus production is forecast at 1,980 MT, a considerable increase on the poor harvest of 2001. Imports are forecast to fal from the levels seen in CY2001, when the trade looked to overseas suppliers to make up the shortfall in the domestic harvest. Consequently, CY2002 imports are forecast at 4,400 MT. The U.S. remains a major source for imported asparagus, although Spain and Peru have strengthened their market share.

HONG KONG, June 19, 2002 -- Hong Kong's import of US cotton dropped from 78,548 MT in MY99 to 70,191 MT in MY00. The 11% decrease in import cotton was partly due to an increase in prices for US cotton and decrease in prices for Australian cotton. In addition, Pakistan resumed supply of cotton in MY00. As a result, US market share dropped from 69% in MY99 to 61% in MY00. However, future prices show that US cotton is still most price-competitive in the market and its dominance is expected to continue in MY2001.
