Guidance Document for Aflatoxin Controls
EU-25, April 22, 2005 -- DG SANCO published on its website a
guidance document for competent authorities for the control
of aflatoxins. The document was created to bring more
harmonization to the implementation by the Member States of
the rigorous EU legislation on aflatoxin contamination in
nuts and certain other products. This has been particularly
important in light of the new EU framework regulation on
food and feed controls.

Register of existing GM food and feed products
published by the Commission
EU-25, April 22, 2005 -- Since the entry into force of
Regulation 1829/2003 on GM food and feed in April 2004, all
GM products seeking to enter the EU market as food or feed
have to undergo a thorough authorization procedure,
including scientific safety assessment by EFSA. However,
there are certain GM food and feed products which can be
legally sold in the EU according to the rules in place
before Regulation 1829/2003.

Nicaragua Sugar Annual
NICARAGUA, April 22, 2005 -- Sugar cane production is
estimated at 4.4 million MT in the 2004/2005 harvest. A
similar production is forecasted for the 2005/2006 season.
Nicaragua exported 178,489 MT of sugar in the 2004/2005
season. Sugar exports are expected to remain at a similar
level in the 2005/2006 season

Soybean and Soybean Meal Duties to Rise
TURKEY, April 22, 2005 -- Today the Government of Turkey
announced new customs duties on a variety of feed
ingredients including soybeans and soybean meal. Soybean
duties will increase from zero to four percent during the
period August 1 to December 31 2005. Soybean and other
oilseed meal duties will increase from zero to four percent
for EU countries, and from two to six percent for other
countries during the period July 1 to December 31 2005.
Industry sources assume rates were increased to improve
crushing margins and reduce stocks of sunflower seeds held
by Trakya Birlik, a quasi-state sunflower cooperative.
