Cotton output may not cross 9.5 million bales
The cotton production has finally come into the negative column endorsing the fears that the production would not cross 9.5 million bales.
Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association has issued the latest figures on Thursday, which bracketed a number of Punjab districts showing shortage of production.
Earlier, all 20 cotton producing districts of Punjab had been signalling high production.
However, Punjab is still showing an increase of 3.76 percent compared to the corresponding period of last year. The province produced 5.318 million bales compared to last year's 5.126 million bales.
The overall production of the country for the first time appeared into negative figure of 1.94 percent. So far the country produced 6.587 million bales compared to 6.717 million bales of the previous year during the same time.
Production in Sindh is gradually coming down and the overall decline is 20.25 percent with a total crop of 1.268 million bales. During the same time last year the province produced 1.5 million bales.
The Cotton Assessment Committee had already revised the production target fixing anew as 10 million bales.Earlier, the target was 10.7 million
bales.Thought, the cotton prices have significantly come down from record high, the shortage might result in escalation of prices.
