Possibility of ice melting being examined- Shah
HYDERABAD-Sindh Minister for Irrigation and Power, Syed Ali
Mir Shah on Saturday hinted at the scientific study of ice
melting in order to overcome the shortage of water in the
country.
He was speaking as chief guest at Farmers Day, organised by
Sindh Abadgar Board at Dr. Zulfiqar Yousufani Farm near Tando
Allahyar. The minister said Federal Ministry of Science and
Technology will be persuaded for conducting scientific test of
ice-melting and if the said analysis received in positive
results,the recommendations will be forwarded to the
government for implementation.
He said that the country at present was facing acute shortage
of water because of natural calamity and the government was
making all out efforts to judiciously supply the water for
drinking and agriculture purpose in order to avert the
situation.
The Sindh Government is making efforts for proper
implementation on Water Accord on 1990 so that the province
could get its due share of water, Syed Ali Mir Shah said and
called upon the intellectuals, growers and media men of Sindh
to hold regular meetings with the progressive growers and
other concerned persons of Punjab province in connection with
proper implementation on Water Accord.
The minister called upon the growers to avoid wastage of water
for their own interest and utilise the same according to
requirements of crops. The water shortage crisis can be
averted through economical use of water with maximum crop
production, he added.
He emphasised the need of adoption of latest agriculture
technologies including land levelling and zero tillage so that
maximum crop production could be achieved with usage of
minimum quantity of water.
He said that out of 42 thousand water courses in Sindh, only
seven thousand water courses were lined in proper shape while
rest of water courses causing the wastage of water. The
government has launched a project of bricks lining of water
course in order to avoid the wastage of water, the minister
said and added that under the project, 75 percent amount for
bricks lining of water course will be provided by the
government while the growers will share the remaining 25
percent amount.
He called upon the growers to take advantage of the said
schemes of the government and make their water course bricks
lined for their own interests. He informed that strict action
is also being initiated against those, who were involved in
water tempering. The officers of Irrigation Department have
been strictly directed to ensure judicious distribution of
water, he added.
Referring to the complaints of the growers including land
revenue, water charges and electricity bills as well as
harassment from HESCO officials, the minister assured that the
genuine demands of the growers will be fulfilled by the
government and concerned departments will be approached for
redressal of their grievances.
