Korangi Fisheries Harbour to become operational in March 2002

ISLAMABAD- Feb 15 (APP): Korangi Fisheries Harbour (KFH)  will become operational after grant of fishing licenses to the medium sized vessel operators in March 2002.
The licenses for Deep Sea Fishing to the ten applicants are likely to be issued next week giving boost to the fishery production and enhancing exports of the country.

This was stated by Shafi Niaz, Advisor to Chief Executive on Food and Agriculture while talking to APP after presiding over a meeting of National Fishery Board here today.

He said it was also decided to carry out a comprehensive survey of bottom configuration of KFH and Port Qasim has been asked to extend helping hand in fulfilling the task.

The meeting observed that PC-1 project with regard to repair of approach roads to the KFH should be revised and submitted to MINFAL for approval before the end of current month, he added.

The meeting decided that anomaly in the classification of fishing on the basis of length and classification done in the present policy on the basis of Gross Registered Tonnage needs to be certified before commissioning any vessels.

Shafi Niaz said it was decided that invoicing of fishery exports would be done by the exporters by their own on trial basis for six months. The situation would be strictly monitored and action would be taken against those found involved in corrupt practices.

If this system fail to prove successful than a new strategy to ensure transparency may be evolved. He said Punjab Fishery Board was instructed to prepare a feasibility study for the establishment of Fish Processing Plants in the Punjab with in four months.

The provinces have been asked to priorities and clearly identify new projects for development of fishery sector for approval. They may seek assistance of the MINFAL in this connection, he added.

The meeting was told that an amount of Rs. 700 million had been earmarked for fishery development so that provinces should prepare viable development projects in this connection.
