Need for learning WTO subjects stressed
ISLAMABAD (August 18 2002) : A seminar on 'Why is it important to learn about the WTO' was held under the joint management of 'The Traits Centre for WTO Studies' and the Institute of Policy Studies (IPS) here.
Abbas Raza, Managing Director, Traits talked about the importance of learning WTO subjects, with special reference to the importance of studying WTO subjects at this point in time and its implications for Pakistan.
He briefly described the outlines for the Post-Graduate Diploma (for business executives and post-master students), Certificate and Short Courses (on customs valuation, protection to domestic industry - options and restrictions under GATT/WTO).
Raza told the participants that these courses would help Pakistan's trade and industry in international trade on account of GATT/WTO rules and regulations.
He said that the course would enable the participants to (i) to understand the forms of protection to domestic industry and trade remedy measures available to the domestic industry against foreign competition, (ii)conduct of trade and industry in the light of the rules and provisions of the WTO, (iii) preparation of cases for protection to domestic industry in terms of GATT/WTO Rules, and (iv) to respond to the queries and for completion of questionnaires generated as a result of anti-dumping, countervailing and safeguard measures initiated against or from Pakistan.
Khalid Rahman, Executive Director, Institute of Policy Studies in the closing remarks thanked the participants for participating in the seminar and stressed on the need for such courses and intimated that these courses were specially designed and were the only of their kind to be ever offered in Pakistan.
