WTO era to attract influx of Indian
goods
LAHORE (May 10 2003) : WTO regulations coming in force in the year 2005 would further attract the influx of Indian goods, if proper remedial and safeguard measures were not adopted.
This was stated by Pakistan Sugar Mills Association (PSMA) Chairman, Javed Kayani in a press statement, while commenting on recent regional developments.
He was sceptical about inclusion of sugar in a list of positive items for trade with India.
Indian sugar, which was imported in past, contained very high contents of sulphur. Moreover, the 'ICUMSA' of Indian sugar was about 150.
He was of the view that interests of local sugar industry and growers should not be jeopardised by taking such decision.
He suggested that the government should call a meeting of all the stakeholders before any item is considered for import from India.
He said there are perhaps numerous items, which are cheaper in India, but we should not allow Pakistan to fall prey and become a dumping ground for such Indian goods.
Nevertheless, we do support healthy competition but not at the cost of closing down the indigenous industry.
