Ukraine completes sowing of early spring crops

Ukraine as of May 2, 2019, completed sowing of early spring grain crops on 2.1 million ha, the press service of the Agricultural Policy and Food Ministry of Ukraine has reported.

The ministry said that farmers continue sowing late spring crops – corn in grain (2.1 million ha or 45 percent of the target), buckwheat (400 ha) and millet (7,000 ha or 11 percent). Sowing of industrial crops continues sugar beets (212,000 ha or 87 percent), sunflower (3 million ha or 53 percent) and soybeans (354,000 ha or 19 percent).

According to the ministry, agricultural enterprises contracted and purchased 1.1 million tonnes of fertilizers (including carryover stocks from the previous year), which is 106 percent of the previous demand.

As reported, the Agricultural Policy and Food Ministry predicted the sowing of early spring grain and leguminous crops on an area of 2.3 million ha. The projected area for all spring grain and leguminous crops for 2019 is 7.2 million ha.
