Parachute technology for rice being introduced in Punjab

SIALKOT (February 03 2003) : Parachute technology of rice is being introduced for putting the agriculture sector on modern lines to bring revolutionary improvement in per acre yield.

Official sources told Business Recorder here on Sunday that the Parachute technology of rice would be introduced in 226 union councils of Sialkot, Gujranwala and Hafizabad districts during the Kharif season and necessary arrangements are being given final touches in this regard.

The Parachute technology has been obtained from China and now is being introduced in the Punjab for getting positive yielding results of paddy crop.

Under this technology, the nurseries of paddy would be sown in "trays" and after some time the plants would be shifted to agricultural fields under the specific methods of the technology.

As many as 45,200 parachute trays would be utilised during the demonstration of this technology in three districts (Sialkot, Gujranwala and Hafizabad) costing Rs 9,04,000.00.

Out of this, in Sialkot 22,400, Gujranwala 17,000 and Hafizabad 5800 parachute trays would be used during a demonstration of the technology.

Two hundred parachute trays would be utilised for developing one acre for raising a nursery. The Parachute technology will be demonstrated on 103 plots in three districts and urea, TSP, SOP and Zinc Sulphate would be available on 50 percent cost-sharing basis.

In Sialkot 50 demonstration plots, Gujranwala 40 and Hafizabad 13 plots would be prepared under this technology of rice transplantation.

In Sialkot district the Parachute technology would be introduced in 112 union councils, 85 union councils of Gujranwala and 29 union councils of Hafizabad districts.

The introduction of this technology would support in minimising the workload of growers in sowing of paddy in their fields and help increase the per acre yield of paddy. It is expected that this technology will replace the traditional method of paddy sowing which is very tough and cumbersome and paddy growers will feel relief.

The Punjab Agriculture Department is making adequate efforts for selecting sites for demonstration plots and under the programme one acre demonstration plot will be sown in each union council of Sialkot, Gujranwala and Hafizabad districts, sources added.

UPLIFT SCHEMES: Apart from this, the Punjab government has allocated Rs 666.5 million during the current fiscal period for the completion of 40 different development schemes pertaining to agriculture development in the province.

Under this programme, special attention would be focused on enhancing the acreage of Basmati rice and sunflower and other oilseed crops.

Special efforts would also be made for introducing new varieties of less duration and less needed water in Punjab.

The step is being taken keeping in view the shortage of water as well as to promote new varieties of different crops in different parts of the province, sources added.
