Cotton-sowing in Balochistan achieves 97% target

ISLAMABAD-The Cotton sowing gained momentum in Balochistan province as it was sown over an area of 40,162 hectares thus achieving 97 % of the sowing target during 2001-2002.  Detail

Cotton growers warned against crop infestation

KHANEWAL-Cotton crop cultivated in most of the district is in fairly good condition at present, however the attack of pink bollworm is a imminent threat that can damage the amount and quality of the produce, following the recent rains.

Khanewal district is among the most vital regions of southern Punjab for cotton cultivation, with production over lacs of acres every year. Deputy director Agricultural, Ch Ali Ahmad Goraya said to combat the threat, it was necessary for growers to avoid using sprays of a specific group.

He said pesticides which may he useful for the cotton crop include triezophos, hyfetherince, cyper- matherine, cyhalotherine, trilo matherine, delta matherine and fanohrate.

KARACHI-Sindh finance and planning minister, Dr Abdul Hafeez Shaikh, has said that large scale plantation of palm and coconut and corporate farming will not only cut down import bill significantly but also add to the beauty of coastal areas, promote tourism and control the environmental pollution. He stated this while talking to a four-member delegation of Pakistan Coconut and Palm Planticians Society.

The minister said the government would extend all cooperation to NGOs in projects of national importance. He said the production of edible oil as per national requirement would not only save us huge foreign exchange but also contribute to the economic well being of people associated with this sector. Hafeez said that Coastal Development Authority was being reactivated so that economic activities could receive a boost at the coastal area.

The delegation briefed the minister about the activities of their organization and said the society is endeavouring to promote awareness about palm and coconut plantation on coastal areas. They proposed that the government should allot land on 15-20 year lease for plantation of palm and coconut along the coastal belt. APP

ISLAMABAD-The government has decided to establish a mechanism to monitor requirements and new trends of international market before sowing of major crops.
The agriculturists would be apprised about information so that they could avail the opportunity and draw maximum benefit from it. According to official sources the decision has been taken to encourage growers to boost their output.

The latest information about requirements and new trends of international market may greatly help the government and growers in devising new strategies to cope with the situation. It would enable the farmers to avail benefit from the information by bringing about required changes in cropping pattern in accordance with the demands of the open market. It was decided to review the possibilities of enhancing exportable agriculture production.

It decided that representatives of Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) would be involved in future deliberations to increase exports and get feedback. It was also decided that agriculture extension department would provide necessary information to the farmers and would coordinate with them in accordance with demands and supply mechanism of the international market.

Cotton sowing surpasses target

ISLAMABAD-Cotton sowing in Punjab has been completed over an area of 2.477 million hectares, surpassing the target of 2.02 million hectares and registering an increase of 3.9 per cent over the last year's sowing.

Federal Committee of Agriculture (FCA) has set 2.02 million hectares as area target for Punjab province. However the province enhanced its target and it was re-fixed at 2.45 million hectares. According to official source, overall 2.56 million hectares area was fixed as target for cotton growing in the country but an area of 2.89 million hectares, almost at par with last year, have been sown which exceeded the target by 13 percent.

The crop condition is satisfactory and recent rains were useful for the crop.
He said Agriculture Researchers and Field Scientists are guiding the farmers for crop management practices and pest control measures. Area target given to Sindh was 0.5 million hectares, of which an area of 0.38 million hectares which is 76 % of the target has so far been sown, adding he said, as compared to last year it is 28 % less than the area sown during corresponding period of last year.

 

Wheat stocks inspection starts

LAHORE-The Provincial Food Department has started inspecting the stocks of wheat throughout the province. All the relevant officers are instructed to remain on duty during the inspection. The inspection teams have been instructed to inspect at least one district on daily basis. They are supposed to review the stocks quantity and the measures adopted for the protection of these stocks. They will also point out the irregularities to the concerned officers of the department.
