Cotton sowing completed over
4.04 million hectares
ISLAMABAD-The sowing of cotton crop has completed over an
area of 3.04 million hectares surpassing the overall target of
2.56 million hectares area fixed for cotton growing in the
country for year 2001.
The cotton cultivation is also more than 4.4 percent of the last
year sowing which exceeded the target of 18.7 percent.Federal
Minister for Food and Agriculture Khair Muhammad Junejo said
here Aug 21, August, 2001.
He said the crop position is satisfactory
and recent rains were useful for the crop. However, he said,
insect pests were observed on the crop and provincial
agriculture departments are fully aware of the problems.
Junejo said in Punjab province cotton has been sown over an area
of 2.477 million hectares against its enhanced target of 2.45
million hectares. Thus showing an overall increase of 3.9
million hectares over last years sowing area which was 2.385
million hectares.
Area target given to Sindh was 0.5 million hectares but
cotton crop was cultivated over an area of 0.526 million
hectares thus showing one percent less than the area sown in
last year, he added. He said NWFP has also tried to
motivate farmers for cultivation in D.I. Khan and so far 8,000
acres have been brought under cultivation in the province.
The minister said Federal and Provincial governments took
efforts to sow cotton in paddy growing area of Pat Feeder (Dera
Murad Jamali). Some incentives including 50 percent free
of seed were distributed amongst the growers and technical staff
was deputed in the area to educate the farmers to grow cotton.
Provision of free of cost cotton seed, agriculture credit
facilities and technical know how for cotton growers in the
areas has helped cultivation of about 40,000 hectare of cotton
in Balochistan. |
