Vigilance teams formed to check water theft

SUKKUR--Chief Engineer (CE) Sukkur Barrage, Muhammad Musa Memon has constituted a vigilance team under the supervision of Superintending Engineer (SE) Sukkur Barrage Abbas Ali Awan to conduct surprise raids on water thefts, illegal water courses and illegal lift machines in the jurisdiction of Nara and Rohri Canals.

CE Sukkur Barrage said a here on Dec 24, 2001 comprehensive and transparent rotation schedule had been put into operation in view of the acute water shortage persisting in Sukkur Barrage command area. The shortage appeared to be more than 60 percent of the actual requirement and rational strategy had been adopted to face it and enable the growers at tail- ends to get water for their lands.

He said several mobile teams would work to check water thefts and misuse of water courses. The teams had been directed to prosecute all such violators under the existing laws.SE Sukkur Barrage, meanwhile visited Patni and Rohri Feeders to check water thefts. Chief Engineer refuted reports of discriminatory policy for Rohri Canal water users, by providing more water share for Nara Canal area. He said a proper guideline had been given by the Provincial Irrigation Minister and therefore there was no question of deviation from it.

He said on average Sukkur and Gudu Barrages were receiving 16 thousand cusecs of water daily and some 2000 cusecs water on average was being released for meeting the needs of Kotri Barrage.

The CE said in view of reports of rains in upcountry, hopes of increase in the water flow at Gudu and Sukkur have arisen and the position might improve further in mid- January. He said, the rotation schedule would continue till the end of January, 2002.
