FOs to undertake Linning projects

Chaniho has underlined the need of social mobilization for the
establishment of Water Users Associations and Farmers
Organizations to undertake the linning of water courses in the
province.
Under the National Drainage Program (NDP), 200 water courses
are to be linned in Nara Canal Command Area. seventy five
percent expenses of this project will be financed by the Worl
Bank, other donor agencies and the government while rest of
the amount is to be paid by growers, minister stated at a
meeting held here Friday at his office. The meeting, also
attended by provincial minister for irrigation & power Ali Mir
Shah, was convened to discuss the project of water course
linning for conservation of irrigation water.
Chaniho suggested launching of mass contact with growers for
apprising them of the benefits of linning the water courses
and said that the experts of NDP and Water Management
department will provide technical assistance to the Water
Users Associations and Farmers Organizations. The NGOs would
help contact the farmers and in social mobilization therefore
an effective organization consisting of NGOs,
autonomous organizations and private sector be set up to
extend help to the growers in linning of water courses, he
asserted.
The minister constituted a committee, headed by the provincial
coordinator of NDP, to submit recommendations on formation of
Water Users Associations and Farmers Organizations besides
framing of terms of references.
Ali Mir Shah also stressed on linning of water courses for
avoiding waste of water and suggested carrying out technical
survey of water courses. Secretary agriculture Abdul Rasheed
Memon said that the Farmers Organizations (FO) will be
responsible for fair distribution of water, revenue
collection, monitoring and maintenance of water courses, water
management etc. The provincial coordinator of NDP Brig.(R)
Abdul Haque informed that so far 23 FOs have been issued
certificates and 20 other FOs are set to start functioning.
Director General Water Management Sindh Rao Abdul Jabar Khan,
Arbab Ghulam Rahim, representatives of Sindh Graduates
Association, Engro Chemical Pakistan and other NGOs attended
the meeting.
