ACP criticises middleman role
Lahore-Ever since the commencement of sugarcane crushing
season the middleman has become grossly active in indulging
of malpractices.
The previous day, police authorities of Bahawalpur division
collected substantial force from various police stations and
under the code name "Operation Ganna (sugarcane)" started
stopping hundreds of trawlers and trolleys loaded with
sugarcane going to various sugar mills.
The police brutally manhandled the sugarcane growers during
the severe winter night and in some cases instances of
indecent and insulting behaviour by the police meted out to
the growers was also noticed. This was reported by Syed Shakir
Hussein, the Divisional President of Chamber of Agriculture
(Punjab), to Ch. Sultan Ali, President, Chamber of Agriculture
(Punjab), on telephone.
He further stated that the police had locked up hundreds of
vehicles in numerous police stations and was compelling the
growers to sell cane to the middleman and not directly to the
mills.
The police action has greatly harassed the growers and the
middleman has started purchasing cane from the fields at
manipulated prices in view of created situation.
The growers have strongly condemned the "Operation Ganna
(sugarcane)" and a feeling of anguish and anger prevails
amongst growers on account of this operation.
