10pc fall in cane-sowing area
feared
LAHORE–There will be upto 10 per
cent decrease in the area under sugarcane cultivation in the
province primarily due to mounting water shortage, said
agriculture experts here on Tuesday.
The agriculture experts said that as there were 50-70 per cent
water shortage in the river inflows, main crops of rabi,
including wheat and sugarcane, would be affected adversely.
They said that area under sugarcane would be significantly
reduced in canal-irrigated parts of the province. On the other
hand, water could be irrigated to wheat crop on only three
occasions instead of five times this season.
Meanwhile, an official of provincial Agriculture Department
informed that a meeting of Irrigation and Agriculture
officials would be held on Wednesday (today) to devise a plan
for ensuring availability of water for wheat and other crops
on crucial stages.
