History, Geography and Administration
With the advent of the 20th century, the
world’s largest Indus Basin Canal Irrigation System became
functional, opening up great opportunities and challenges in
the field of agriculture. These had to be dealt with in a
proper manner to accelerate agricultural production and
promote the well-being and prosperity of newly emerging rural
communities.
It was in this perspective that the famous Punjab Agri. College was
established in 1909 with the object to produce
technical and scientific manpower needed to provide leadership
for agricultural development of the newly colonized regions of
the Punjab. Thus higher education in agriculture in the
subcontinent made a historic start with the institution of
Licentiate in Agriculture which was a regular 3-year course
after matriculation. Later on, this course was upgraded and
made into a 4-year degree course, i.e., B.Sc.
Agriculture, for which purposes the College was affiliated
with the University of the Punjab in 1917. Not long after, the
postgraduate degree of M.Sc. Agriculture was instituted
in 1923 and Ph.D. in 1942.
A Research Institute was added to the college for the purpose
of producing agricultural research and technologies to raise
agricultural productivity. This institute developed into an
outstanding research facility which carried out
commodity-oriented research for the benefit of provincial
agriculture and also conducted the bulk of postgraduate
research degree programmes instituted in the College. Over the
years, the College and the Research Institute became merged
into a single entity, carrying out the functions of teaching,
research and extension under a unified leadership. And thus
was born a model of agricultural education and service to
community which worked wonders for national agriculture.
In order to reorganise and improve the existing educational
systems, the Government appointed two National Commissions one
on Food and Agriculture and the other on Education for the
purpose of introducing the needed reforms. Both these
commissions recommended the establishment of an Agricultural
University at Lyallpur now Faisalabad.
The Governor of the then province of West Pakistan promulgated
the Agricultural University Ordinance on the 28th September,
1961, notifying the establishment of Agricultural University
at Lyallpur (now Faisalabad) on the 1st November, 1961,
defining teaching, research, extension and short courses as
the major areas of its responsibility. The University was
reconstituted and reorganised for the purpose of improving its
teaching, research, publication and administration, and
safeguarding its autonomy and democratisation of its
constitution through the University of Agriculture, Faisalabad,
act, 1973. The College of Veterinary Sciences (formerly known
as College of Animal Husbandry), Lahore, which was established
in 1910 became a constituent college of the University in
December, 1971.
The University was to develop on the paradigm of the former
Punjab Agricultural College and Research Institute, which had
evolved into a viable system of integrated pursuit of resident
teaching, research and extension. But in the process, the
Research Institute was separated from the University, which
was a signal to the University to concentrate more on basic
part of agricultural research than long-gestation applied and
adaptive parts.
However, as it befits an Agricultural University, it is
incumbent on us to create the necessary environment for an
integrated pursuit of teaching, research and extension, and,
in this connection, we have already made a start to further
strengthen our research capability. The University acquired
750 acres of land on Jhang Road about 4 miles from this
Campus, which has now been developed into a self-sufficient
Postgraduate Agricultural Research Station(PARS). The
facilities for field research in the disciplines of Agronomy,
Plant Breeding, Entomology, Plant Pathology, Crop Physiology,
Soil Science, Saline Agriculture, Agroforestry, Horticulture
including fruit plants and vegetables have been properly laid
out and made operational. Most of our research in these areas
is now located at this new research station.
Degree Programmes
The University offers well integrated programmes of teaching
and research in agriculture and allied disciplines to ensure
interaction and exchange of ideas among scientists of
different specialisation’s. Under the currently operative
system, each year is divided into two main semesters of 19
weeks each viz., the Winter and Spring Semesters and an
additional shorter session of 8-10 weeks, viz., the Summer
Session. The following four-year Degree Programmes, after F.Sc.,
