Advisory

Water medication is safe and effective too

Water can be used to administer drugs quickly and effectively, especially to sick birds, since treatment can start immediately without waiting for the feed tank to empty or for feed to be mixed. Also, birds that are not eating will usually drink water, so using this method can treat almost all birds. But correct procedures must be followed for safe and effective water medication to work. Improper water medication can lead to inefficient use of the drug as well as produce residues or even toxicity in your birds.

Correct drug can give 100% results
Before using any drug, obtain an accurate diagnosis of the problem. Using drugs based on a hunch can be counterproductive as well as cost valuable time and money. Once an accurate diagnosis is made, use a drug that is approved to treat The specific disease.

Do as directed
Once the proper drug has been selected, carefully read and follow the product's label. Here, verify that the drug you plan to use is recommended for the diagnosed disease and that the dosage is correct. Use drugs only at the recommended levels. Doubling the dosage will increase the risk of residues and may not be twice as effective.

Record keeping will be helpful in future
Raising poultry is a big responsibility that involves remembering many details. Management of those details often means the difference between profit and loss. Therefore, since drugs are expensive, it is best not to trust memory for the details of that drug. Instead, keep a record of the drug(s) used, the dosage(s) used, and the date(s) administered. In addition, record the lot or control number of the drug used. These records can provide a way to track and solve any problems encountered with using a medication.

Operate Medicators Correctly
The two basic types of water medication systems are the medication tank and the proportioner. The water medication tank can accurately administer drugs when used correctly since only the amount of drug to be used is mixed in the system. But you must be certain that the correct amount of drug is added to the tank. Despite these advantages, medication tanks can be large, bulky, and difficult to clean. Proportioners work on a principle of water flow, which provide either a siphoning effect or pumping action to meter out the correct amount of the drug. Several types of proportioners are available. Most units are small and portable, but their accuracy is sometimes questioned. Pressure fluctuations, poor or variable water quality, and drug insolubility have been shown to cause proportioner inaccuracies. When proportioners are used, their accuracy should be monitored.

Correct water intake is the key of success
We all know the rule of thumb that a bird will drink 2 pounds of water for every pound of feed consumed. That rule, however, assumed a house temperature of 70oF. . In warmer temperatures, the 2-pound rule underestimates drug consumption and overestimates consumption in cooler temperatures. But besides temperature, diseases or other factors also can affect water consumption. So water consumption must be measured before administering drugs. While several methods can be used to estimate water consumption, probably the Most accurate in to use water meters and keep records of water consumption.

Use good quality water
Certain drugs may be poorly soluble in water that is extremely hard or has an improper pH. In such cases, birds may not get an adequate dose of the drug. So be sure to verify that your water is of high quality before treatment.

Clean and Label Water Lines
All water lines and valves should be labeled clearly and legibly with large signs pointing out which house or area is serviced by that valve or line.

"After using any medication, do not flush lines into the litter, since litter can become wet and contaminated."
