AUSTRALIA,
September

2004
--
Improved
grain
supplies,
following
an
extended
drought,
combined
with
strong
domestic
demand
are
expected
to
increase
poultry
meat
production
to a
record
level
in
2004/05.
A
slight
easing
in
the
value
of
the
Australian
dollar
together
with
the
rise
in
production
should
lead
to a
slight
increase
in
2004/05

Soybean
Situation
Report
NIGERIA,
September
14,
2004
--
The
AgOffice
has
revised
Nigeria's
soybean
production
and
consumption
estimates
significantly
upwards
based
on
updated
information
from
official
and
trade
sources.
The
growth
in
the
poultry
industry
fueled
by
the
poultry
meat
import
ban
in
2002
has
led
to
increased
demand
for
soybean
meal.
Domestic
production
of
meal
(172,000
MT)
currently
does
not
meet
the
needs
of
the
industry.
Imports
(30,000
MT)
do
not
cover
the
supply
deficit,
as
local
producers
do
not
have
sufficient
credit.
The
price
of
soybean
meal
is
reportedly
$460/MT.
Imports
should
increase
in
MY2004.
For
continued
growth,
the
poultry
industry
needs
to
find
credit
resources
for
its
small
producers,
more
efficient
means
of
production,
and
increase
competition.

SOUTH
AFRICA,
REPUBLIC
OF,
September
14,
2004
--
South
Africa's
2003/04
fresh
deciduous
fruit
production
is
expected
to
increase
by
about
5%
because
of
good
rains
and
temperatures
from
the
last
season.
Apple
production
will
rise
by
3%,
table
grapes
2%,
and
pears
will
increase
by
13%
from
last
year.
The
industry
is
planning
to
reduce
the
current
high
input
costs,
and
to
develop
new
markets
and
expand
existing
ones
both
locally
and
internationally.
Europe
is
still
South
Africa's
most
important
export
market,
although
export
trends
are
changing
as
South
Africa's
market
shares
are
increasing
in
Russia,
the
Far
East
and
African
regions.
