EU Commission
Approves Monsanto's Biotech
Corn, NK603
EU-25, November 3, 2004 --
On October 26, the European
Commission authorized the
marketing of foods and food
ingredients produced from
Monsanto's biotech corn
(NK603) in accordance with
the GM Food and Feed
regulation. NK603 had
already been approved under
Directive 2001/18/EC for
import and for use as animal
feed and for industrial
processing in July 2004.
This is only the second
biotech product the EU has
authorized since 1998 when a
number of EU countries
imposed marketing bans.
Currently, there are about
30 biotech products in the
pipeline still awaiting
approval by the EU.
