Provisional MRL and uniform tolerance

JAPAN, June 2, 2004 -- The report highlights proposed procedures from Japan's MHLW for the establishment of 1) provisional maximum residue limits (MRLs), 2) MRLs for processed foods, and 3) a uniform tolerance, that are a part of introduction of a positive list system; a system to prohibit the distribution of foods that contain agricultural chemicals above a certain level of MRLs.

UZBEKISTAN, REPUBLIC OF, June 2, 2004 -- Uzbekistan's MY 2004/05 oilseeds production is expected to remain stagnant due to lower cotton production. Uzbekistan still remains an important market for U.S. soybeans, although for the past two years Uzbekistan was unable to import soybeans because of high prices. MY 2004/05 soybean imports are forecast at 30,000 metric tons (MT).

TAIWAN, June 2, 2004 -- The United States remains the major supplier of Taiwan cotton imports with an expected 35 percent market share. Taiwan's total cotton imports in MY03/04 and MY04/05 are forecast to 1.05 and 1.08 million bales, respectively. The increase in import forecasts is primarily due to anticipated decreases in world cotton prices that will encourage stocks building despite the ongoing contraction in Taiwan's textile industry.

Production for processing is expected up by 10% from 2003/04 at 5.8 million tons.
