Water shortage hits Larkana
LARKANA (December 20 2004): Larkana district has been facing an acute shortage of irrigation water and it has prevented sowing of wheat on thousands of acres, PPI learnt here on Sunday. According to details, many canals in the Larkana district are completely dried up. There is virtually no water in Doka, Kania, Naich, Ghaniwar, Mirani, Bakhodero and Pathan canals of Dokri Taluka. The acute water shortage has resulted in non-sowing of wheat on thousands of acres and it is feared the wheat-sowing target will be hardly achieved this year.
This is likely to further aggravate wheat-flour shortage crisis. It may be remembered that, presently, the wheat-flour is being sold here at Rs 17 per kilogram.
In this regard, President Sindh Aiwan-e-Zaraat Qaim Ali Shaikh, talking to PPI, said that if the government failed to take steps regarding ending the water crisis, the Larkana district might witness a famine.
