PHDEB has invited the largest breeder of Gladiolus in Netherlands
Thursday, September-09-2004

Sept 9: Pakistan Horticulture Development and Export Board (PHDEB) has invited Mr. Kees Van Den Plas Director, Stoop Flowerbulbs Holland, the world largest breeder of Gladiolus in Netherlands to visit Pakistan for delivering a lecture on cultivation of flowers out of bulbs like Gladiolus, Lily and Tulip. According to a press release issued here today, PHDEB is going to arrange a workshop in this regard at a local hotel on September 14, 2004. Mr. Shamoon Sadiq, CEO of PHDEB claims that the event is a part of the awareness campaign launched by PHDEB to develop floriculture sector in the country at par with international standards.

Stoop Flowerbulbs Holland is still expanding its activities worldwide and is continuously improving its breeding program focusing on varieties that produce better results in the filed as well as in green houses showing a higher percent age of first class flowers, longer spikes, more colours and better disease resistance. In addition to the taller varieties, Mr. Kees Van Ber Plas will also introduce varieties less than 80-cm tall with less plant and more spike. In future he will be looking for import of quality flowers from Pakistan.

From historical prospective PHDEB informed that more than 2000 years ago, the Greeks and Romans have been using Gladiolus to brighten up important events. Also today, Gladiolus is still quite popular in the Mediterranean region, where it is still the most important cut-flower. The wild species of the genus Gladiolus, belonging to the iridaceae family, is mainly found in the south and Central Africa and around the Mediterranean.
