Rs 33m to be spent on repair of Rice Canal

LARKANA, Aug 12: In order to strengthen the banks of Rice Canal an amount of Rs 33 million for construction of 6,000 feet remaining retaining wall during the fiscal year 2004-05 under the Annual Development Programme. An amount of Rs 15 million was also spent during the last financial year in this regard.

This was stated at a briefing by the superintendent engineer, Irrigation Northern Western Circle Larkana to the District Coordination Officer, Larkana, Abdul Razzaque Qureshi, on Wednesday.

The DCO instructed the SEs of the Irrigation Department that the flood emergency control room should work round-the-clock; to ensure patrolling along the canal paths; be vigilant to control theft of irrigation water; and provide irrigation water, especially to the tail-end growers at any cost during the current Kharif season.

The SE Irrigation said that under the rehabilitation of the Irrigation System Programme, an amount of Rs 36 million was approved by the government for the earthwork on embankments of different canals in the Dadu Canal Irrigation Division in Larkana district.

The SE Irrigation also said an amount of Rs 25 million would be spent on stone-pitching work on SM Canal (Kirthar Canal) opposite Ghari Yaseen town and Ruk Regulator, and an amount of Rs 20 million would be spent under the ADP 2004-05 for the rehabilitation of Saifullah Magsi Canal in Larkana district.

Briefing the DCO, the Executive Engineer Agriculture Engineer Workshop Larkana informed him that out of 12 bulldozers, five were in working condition and the reaming seven required repair, as well as two trucks were being used for shifting the bulldozers from one site to another. The DCO directed him that all the bulldozers should be ready so that in time of need they might be utilised on an emergency basis.
