Fruit exporters highlight constraints
KARACHI (June 22 2007): The Fruit Exporters Association (FEA) has demanded help from the government to remove impediments in fruit exports that are causing financial losses to the exporters.
Talking to Daily Times on Thursday, Chairman FEA Abdul Wahid claimed that the government by levying withholding taxes and denying them freight subsidy is hurting fruit exports of the country.
The Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP), he added, has dropped freight subsidy on mango exports from November 24th, 2006 that the exporters were availing previously.
He said the association had drawn the attention of Federal Commerce Minister, Humayun Akhtar Khan and TDAP officials towards this decision of TDAP.
Taking cognisance of the strong protest by the FEA office bearers, Naveed Arif, Secretary TDAP had assured them, a month ago, of sorting out this issue on priority basis however, after passage of more than a month nothing tangible has emerged.
“As a result of this fruit exporters, specially those involved in large-scale export of mangos to Europe, Middle East and other destinations, are suffering financial losses under the head of freight charges” he added.
He also demanded that the government immediately withdraw taxes on exporters’ Cost and Freight (C and F) and instead the same should applied on Free on Board (F and B) basis.
The exporters, after paying high freight charges and withholding tax by C and F mode, are left with a small margin of profit for themselves. Replying to a question, he said that the fruit exporters are already facing huge financial losses as a result of closure of Kino exports to Russia last year on the pretext of discovering bugs in the export product. tanveer sher
