Country may face shortfall of 3.5mn cotton bales

By Razi Syed

KARACHI (June 22 2007): The country may face a shortfall of around 3.5 million cotton bales in 2007-08 crop season as against an earlier estimate of around 3 million bales.

Importers and traders on Thursday said, the demand of short and long staple cotton remains on increase on the back of growing demand of yarn, cloth and other textile made-ups. A senior trader, Ghulam Rabbani said according to the officials of the ministry of commerce, in the first phase long staple cotton would be allowed through land route from India.

He said the import of short staple cotton from Uzbekistan through Afghanistan would be allowed later after study to examine allowing import of short staple cotton to save local cotton farmers from any adverse impact. Mr Rabbani said any delay in setting up quarantine facilities at Wahga, Chamman, and Torkham to facilitate the import of cotton from India and Uzbekistan would aggravate the textile production in the country. According to the official the Ministry of Food Agriculture and Livestock (MINFAL), on the directives of Economic Coordination Committee, the MINFAL is in process of establishing quarantine facilities at these border areas and such arrangements would be completed by next crop season. Mr Rabbani said this would reduce the cost of import and would help local textile industry to enhance its production and its value addition for increase in textile exports. ECC of the cabinet in May 2007 had agreed to allow the import of long staple cotton through land route from India and Uzbekistan to meet the country’s annual shortfall of 3 million bales.
