Rains badly damage cotton, rice sugarcane, other crops in Sindh

HYDERABAD (September 19 2006): The recent heavy rains caused losses to agriculture sector of Sindh as cotton, sugarcane, rice crops and vegetables damaged badly in almost all districts of the province.

According to an initial survey of losses conducted by Sindh Agriculture Department, overall 32 percent cotton sown area of Tharparkar, Umerkot, Mirpurkhas, Sanghar, Tando Allahyar, Badin, Tando Muhammad Khan, Kashmore-Kandhkot, Hyderabad, Matiari, Jamshoro, Dadu, Shikarpur, Nawabshah, Khairpur, Sukkur and Ghotki districts received damages as a result of heavy rains.

The cotton sowing target for the year 2006-2007 has been set at 640,000 hectares in Sindh, of which the growers sown the cotton in an area of 573,870 hectares, a total of 90 percent of the fixed target for the year. However, the heavy rains damaged 23 percent cotton crop, which sown in an area of 182,572 hectares in 22 districts of the province.

According to district wise survey of losses, 100 damages to cotton crop occurred in Shikarpur district where, that sown in an area of 315 hectares.

The districts of Sanghar, Mirpurkhas and Matiari have suffered 74, 68 and 60 percent losses of cotton crop respectively where cotton sown in 78255, 25024 and 19320 hectares of land respectively. The districts of Badin and Kashmore-Kandhkot received 50 percent losses each where cotton sown in 3550 and 100 hectares land respectively.

The other districts, where heavy rains caused damages to cotton crop included Tando Muhammad Khan 43 percent damages in 1290 hectares, Tando Allahyar 41 percent damages in 7544 hectares, Umerkot in 38 percent damages in 8949 hectares, Jamshoro 37 percent damages in 5550 hectares, Hyderabad 35 percent damages in 1960 hectares, Tharparkar 30 percent damages in 320 hectares, Ghotki 20 percent damages in 21400 hectares, Nawabshah 8 percent damages complete and 52 percent partially damages in 29978 hectares, Khairpur 4 percent damages in 3065 hectares while Dadu and Sukkur received 3 percent damages to cotton crop which sown in 300 and 1018 hectares of land respectively. No damages to cotton crop was reported from Karachi, Thatta, Larkana, Qamber-Shahdadkot, Jacobabad and Naushero Feroze districts of the province, the reports said.

The other crops, vegetables and fruits, which received damages to various districts of the province included 70 percent chillies, 28 percent sugarcane and 80 vegetables including onions and tomatoes in Mirpurkhas district, 54 percent chillies, 20 percent sugarcane, 55 percent onions, 11 percent banana and 10 percent orchards in Sanghar district, 60 percent chillies, 90 percent vegetables and 90 percent onions in Tharparkar district, 80 percent chillies, 100 percent tomatoes, 25 percent paddy, 38 percent sugarcane and 60 percent onions in Tando Muhammad Khan district, 81 percent chillies, 51 percent onions, 44 percent vegetables, 14 percent fodder and 8 percent sugarcane in Tando Allahyar district, 90 percent chillies, 95 percent tomatoes, 30 percent sugarcane, 40 percent paddy, 70 percent lady fodder and 100 percent coriander in Badin district, 5 percent paddy in Kashmore-Kandhkot district, 20 percent sugarcane, 30 percent paddy, 60 percent vegetables, 50 percent onion, 40 percent chillies, 55 percent tomatoes, 12 percent fodder, 40 percent millet and 90 percent sweet potatoes in Hyderabad district, 80 percent onions, 20 percent sugarcane, 25 percent banana, 80 percent vegetables in Matiari district, 8 percent sugarcane, 6 percent banana, 35 percent fodder, 25 percent orchard, 30 percent complete and 70 percent partially damages in Nawabshah district, 50 percent till, 20 percent tomatoes and 20 percent onions in Dadu district, complete damages of cotton, till, jowar, chillies, and onion crops in Katcha areas of Dadu district due to floodwater, 7 percent damages to paddy in Shikarpur district, 5 percent date palm in Khairpur district, 9 percent sugarcane, 82 percent chillies, 74 percent vegetables, 84 percent onions and 87 percent tomatoes in Umerkot district, 30 percent rice, 10 percent sugarcane, 21 percent onions and 23 percent sorghum in Jamshoro district and 5 percent damages to sugarcane crop in Ghotki district.
