Sunflower cultivation up by 31 percent
ISLAMABAD (March 27 2004): Sunflower has been
cultivated on a record area of 521,000 acres so
far against a target of 400,000 acres fixed for
2003-04, showing 31 percent increase in acreage
over the last year.
The highest level in sunflower cultivation ever
recorded was in 1997-98. It was 427,000 acres
during last year. It is expected that during the
current year, about 138,586 tons edible oil worth
Rs 3.38 billion will be produced from sunflower
alone.
Target of canola cultivation for 2003-04 has also
been surpassed by 18.34 percent. Canola was
cultivated on an area of 265,000 acres against a
target of 250,000 fixed for 2003-04.
About 60,420 tons of edible oil worth Rs 1.47
billion will be produced from canola. Thus, a
total reduction of Rs 4.85 billion is expected in
import bill of edible oil due to local production.
This was made possible by aggressive campaign by
Pakistan Oilseed Development Board (PODB), good
co-operation received from All Pakistan Solvent
Extractors Association (Apsea), tariff policy,
oilseed prices prevailing in the international
market and disenchantment of growers with
traditional crops.
Currently, the market is very favourable and in
Sindh, growers are receiving Rs 750 to Rs 800 per
40kg of sunflower produce.
