Sugarcane growers switch over to sunflower

KARACHI (March 31 2004): Practically all agriculturists in Sindh have switched over from sugarcane cultivation to sunflower cultivation following the alleged non-co-operation of the sugar mill owners in respect of the non-payment of various dues to the growers.

According to official figures, the cultivation of sunflower last year was on 32,000 acres. This year it has gone up to 180,000 acres.

This shows that the local edible oil production will increase which will curtail the burden of palm and soyabean oil imports. On the other hand, the sugar mill owners will be running to procure sugarcane, but it will hardly be available for crushing next year.

The sunflower oil will now be an addition to the cottonseed oil and rapeseed oil used in the manufacture of Vanaspati Ghee.

It is reported that there is some shortage of sunflower seed for cultivation due to which the growers are facing difficulties. The government will have to make some arrangements so that the growers could get the seed.
