Sindh traders to purchase wheat in big
quantity: Punjab may face crisis
BAHAWALPUR, March 28: Taking advantage of the
government's open wheat policy, the influential
commission agents and waderas of Sindh have made
advance payments of hundreds of thousands of
rupees to the Punjab businessmen to purchase heavy
stocks of wheat.
It is learnt on Saturday that the Punjab traders
have started paying advance money to the wheat
growers to purchase the standing crop between
Rs350 and Rs365 per 40 kilograms. It is feared
that with the bulk purchase and advance deals
between the Punjab traders and the Sindh
commission agents, a heavy quantity of wheat could
be transported to the interior parts of Sindh,
causing its shortage in Bahawalpur, Multan and
Vehari.
Talking to Dawn, Bahawalpur Chamber of Commerce
and Industry President Sheikh Abbas Raza expressed
apprehensions that the Punjab might fall short of
target if the practice continued. This could
create wheat crisis in the province, he added.
He further suggested that instead of buying wheat
by private commission agents or businessmen, the
governments of other provinces should purchase and
stock the wheat for the coming days.
Mr Raza has demanded the Punjab food minister to
impose a ban on interprovincial movement of wheat.
Besides, the flour mills should be allowed to
purchase wheat according to their needs from the
open market so that people were not left at the
mercy of the open market.
Even the private traders, he said, should not be
allowed to purchase wheat till the government
achieved its procurement target.
