Fixing of atta prices provincial matter, National
Assembly told
ISLAMABAD (March 26 2004): National Assembly was
informed on Thursday that the prices of atta were
fixed by the provincial governments and the
federal government had no role in pricing
mechanism.
"The provincial governments issue instructions to
flour mills on atta prices," Minister for Food and
Agriculture Yar Mohammad Rind said. He said that
there was no restriction on export of wheat or its
products.
The minister told the House that the government
issued no permits for export of the commodity and
its bi-products. Last year, he said, the wheat
procurement target was 3.5 million tons and this
year it was fixed at 5.6 million tons.
Replying to queries during the question hour, the
minister said all wheat releases to the flour
mills were made by the provincial governments
while Passco released wheat to the provinces and
agencies in case of shortage.
The minister said that there was no provincial
quota system for fertiliser, as it was a
deregulated commodity.
To another question, he said that 24 permits were
issued for the export of 10,300 cattle during the
last six months.
According to 2002-03 statistics, the minister
pointed out, Pakistan has exported an estimated
126.3 million cattle including sheep, goats,
buffaloes, camels, etc.
