Committee to probe into mutton price hike

LAHORE (March 26 2004): The Punjab government has constituted a committee, led by Secretary Livestock Department, which will review the situation with regards to increase in the prices of mutton and submit its report within a week.

This was decided during a high level meeting of Punjab's Livestock Department on Thursday which was presided over by the Minister for Livestock, Syed Haroon Ahmed Sultan.

While taking strong notice of the high price of mutton, the minister directed that a committee headed by Athar Tahir Secretary Livestock should probe the situation and submit its recommendations so that people could be provided relief.

The minister while addressing the meeting observed that practical steps are being taken to do away with the artificial shortage of mutton and increase in its price.

He observed that due to the scare of bird flu people have stopped eating chicken due to which the demand for mutton has increased considerably and the situation was exploited by those in mutton business.

Director General Research Dr Bashir Bhatti told the meeting that the department has started an awareness campaign which aims to dispel wrong impressions of the people regarding chicken meat. He said that the campaign has already started giving fruitful results.

The poultry breeders have stopped the breeding of the chicks in this situation, the meeting was told.

The official hoped that in the next 20 to 25 days the situation would improve as the demand for mutton would decrease and prices of chicken and mutton would revert to their normal.
