Agriculture, market access deal by July
NAIROBI,March 30: A senior official of the World
Trade Organisation (WTO) said Monday that
framework agreements on the thorny issues of
agricultural subsidies and market access for
non-agricultural products could be reached by
July.
"There is hope and expectation of substantial
progress," WTO Deputy Director General Kipkorir
Aly Azad Rana told a press conference in Nairobi,
ahead of a two-day meeting in Kenya starting on
Tuesday.
"We expect framework agreements on the issues of
agricultural subsidies, market access for
non-agriculture products and trade facilitation on
the Singapore issue by July, which will form the
basis of further negotiations, but it is unlikely
that we shall finish by the end of the year," Rana
told AFP.
"WTO director general (Supachai Panitchpakdi)
hopes that by July, we will have some sort of
reality checks on the issues under negotiations,"
Rana said.
The Singapore issue refers to whether the WTO
should have control over investment, competition,
government procurement and trade facilitation.
Tuesday’s meeting is organised by the
International Trade Center (ITC), a technical
agency of the UN Conference on Trade and
Development and WTO, to discuss the need to have
private sector participation in WTO trade
negotiations.
"The purpose of the meeting is to bring together
the business community and government officials to
focus on multilateral trade negotiations," ITC’s
Executive Director Denis Belisler said.
