ADB workshop for betterment of Barani area
farmers
SIALKOT (March 30 2004): A one-day workshop on
'Sustainable Livelihood in Barani Areas' was held
under auspices of Asian Development Bank and
Agriculture Barani Area Development here on
Monday. The workshop was inaugurated by Sialkot
district Nazim Naeem Javed.
A large number of male and male farmers and
cultivators of Sialkot, Pasrur, Narowal and Gujrat
areas attended the workshop.
Addressing the opening session of the workshop,
Director-General ABAD Colonel Iqbal Badar Khan
said that the aim of holding this workshop was to
gather suggestions and recommendations from
farmers and growers for making the project
effective.
He said that under the project special attention
would be focused on banishing poverty, improvement
of economic conditions of farmers, income to be
generated through cottage industries of women
folk, small farmers, and landless farmers in
Barani (rain-fed) areas.
Expressing confidence that a large number of
farmers in Barani areas would benefit from this
project, Iqbal urged the participants that they
should share their ideas and highlight their needs
and requirements for making the project
successful. He said that their recommendations,
ideas and suggestions would be considered for the
larger interest of the farmer community of Barani
areas of Punjab.
District Co-ordination Officer (DCO) Sialkot Tahir
Raza Naqvi stressed upon the farmers that they
should freely share their ideas and demands for
redressal of difficulties.
Naeem Javed said that the workshop would be
helpful in making the project successful and
achieving cherished goals and attaining food
autarky. Sialkot district government, he said, is
mobilising sufficient funds for promotion of
agriculture in the district.
