Wheat trade to be strictly monitored: Maqbool
LAHORE (April 29
2004): Punjab Governor Lieutenant General Khalid
Maqbool (Retd) has said that government would keep
a vigilant eye on day-to-day sale and purchase of
wheat in the province.
He stated this while talking to journalists during
his visit to Passco, Sui Northern Gas and Garden
Town Exchange offices, here on Wednesday.
About wheat situation he averred that it was
responsibility of the government to ensure payment
of due price to wheat growers without any shortage
of wheat. 'To keep price of wheat under control,
it was imperative that more wheat was cultivated
in the country', he added.
Terming purchase of wheat by private sector as a
welcome development he stated that it would result
in better payments to wheat growers. Pointing to
ensure food security he stated that impact of
prices should be minimised on common man.
Pakistan Agricultural Storage Services Corporation
(Passco) Managing Director Major General Fahim
Akhtar Khan in his briefing to the Governor on the
occasion disclosed that corporation has been given
task of buying 1.4 million metric ton wheat during
the year.
He said Passco was facing difficulty in attaining
the target as private sector was paying additional
Rs 25 per maund in purchase of wheat. He stated
that his corporation should also be allowed to
purchase wheat at that rate in his briefing.
Punjab Governor during his visit to Sui Northern
regional office asked people present there of
their problems and instructed officials to provide
respite to them.
General Manager Sui Northern Gas Muhammad Mujahid
Anwar in his briefing to Punjab Governor during
his visit stated that corporation while having Rs
1.10 billion monthly sales had 0.65 million
customers in Lahore region.
General Manager Garden Town Exchange, Hafeez ul
Islam in his briefing to the Governor during his
visit to the exchange stated that there were 0.63
million customers of telephone department in the
Lahore region.
Governor stated that the department keeping in
view modern day requirements must adapt to
enhanced computerisation. Governor Punjab also
visited PTCL corporate centre during his visit.
