Wheat procurement: government and private
sector facing tough competition
KARACHI (April 23
2004): The private sector and the Sindh government
are facing tough competition for the procurement
of wheat from the growers.
The procurement centres set up by the provincial
government are paying fixed price at Rs 875 per
100kg bag to the growers.
As the private parties are paying about Rs 975 per
100kg bag to the growers, the growers have stopped
supplying commodity to the government centres and
the private parties are taking away wheat from the
growers.
The government has asked the private traders not
to keep a stock of over 200 bags. But the traders
are keeping the commodity under ground and nobody
is able to check them.
This is the reason that wheat flour by the
mill-owners is not being sold at a uniform price
fixed by the government at Rs 11 per kilogram.
It is reported that the growers who had suffered
heavy losses in the sale of sugarcane are now
reaping rich harvest. But the government is
perturbed how to control the price of wheat flour.
