Wheat movement: flour mills put off strike
ISLAMABAD (April 24
2004): All Pakistan Flour Mills Association (APFMA)
on Friday put on hold its announcement for
countrywide strike against ban on inter-provincial
movement of wheat, after a categorical assurance
from the federal government that it would
intervene to get the Punjab government's decision
reversed.
The APFMA delegation comprising Niaz Ahmed,
Sanaullah Khan Durrani and Bilal Sofi held a
meeting with Federal Food Minister Yar Mohammad
Rind to convey its members disgust over Punjab
government's decision.
However, the APFMA team changed their mind at
least for some time so that the federal government
could have sufficient time to get the Punjab
government convinced that the ban on
inter-provincial movement of commodity like wheat
was not in the interest of any federating unit.
Yar Muhammad Rind assured the delegation that the
issue would be discussed with the Punjab and Sindh
to address the grievances of flour millers.
The Punjab government had imposed temporary ban on
transportation of wheat from the province, which
received severe reaction from the other provinces.
The flour mill-owners feel that the ban would
disturb smooth supply of the commodity to other
provinces.
The minister assured the delegation that the
previous year's policy would continue for the
current year to solve wheat shortage problem in
Sindh and other provinces. He assured that the ban
would be lifted soon in consultation with the
Punjab and Sindh.
The delegation assured the Minister that they
would provide Atta to the masses on economical
prices after the solving of the wheat problem.
Later on, the APFMA delegation held a press
conference here to thank the federal food minister
for his quick and what they termed a timely
response to the problem.
The delegation members told newsmen that the ban
on inter-provincial movement of wheat was negation
of the federal cabinet's decision which makes it
mandatory for federating units to ensure timely
and smooth supply of essential commodities.
They hoped that the minister's commitment would
work to their expectations to avert commodity
shortage in the NWFP and Balochistan.
