Sunflower sowing stopped due to seed shortage

KARACHI (April 10 2004): The cultivation of sunflower has practically come to a halt in Sindh due to non-availability of seed.

The growers, losing hope on sugar mills, had switched over to the cultivation of sunflower.

There has been a record cultivation of sunflower this year which is reported to have touched the figure of 200,000 acres in the province.

The land in Sindh is very suitable for sunflower cultivation. The production of local sunflower oil is increasing every year. Last year, the oil production was 175.000 tons, as against 60,000 tons a year before.

The production next year could be higher, but the growers are facing difficulties in getting the seed for cultivation.

The production of local sunflower oil plus rapeseed and cottonseed oils will help a lot to ghee industry in the country.

The total import of edible oil in the country is over 600 million dollars worth per annum.
