Sugarcane growers to get all dues by June 15
ISLAMABAD (April 25
2004): Payment of outstanding dues to sugar cane
growers would be made by June 15, 2004 and the
next crushing season would be started from
November 1, 2004.
This was decided in a meeting of the committee
constituted for sugar sectors, held here on
Saturday with Minister for Industries and
Production, Liaquat Ali Jatoi in chair.
Secretary Ministry of Industries and Production,
Muhammad Javed Ashraf Hussain, Chairman Pakistan
Sugar Mills Association, Secretary General, Kissan
Board Pakistan, Chairman, Trading Corporation of
Pakistan and senior officers of the ministries of
industries & productions, commerce, food and
agriculture and the governments of Punjab, Sindh
and NWFP also attended the meeting.
The meeting of all stakeholders was called by the
ministry of industries and production in pursuance
of the FCC decision to examine and finalise the
conditions for procurement of sugar by TCP.
The meeting also reviewed the problems and issues
of sugar industry and sugar cane growers
particularly outstanding dues of sugarcane farmers
for 2002-2003 and 2003-2004 crushing season.
The PSMA committed to start next crushing season
by November 1, 2004.
The minister stressed the need to implement the
decision of the ECC made in the last meeting in
terms of payment of outstanding dues to the sugar
cane growers.
He reiterated that the PSMA should commit payment
of outstanding dues to the growers and to start
next crushing season from November 1, 2004.
The PSMA chairman informed the meeting about the
problems being faced by the sugar mills in payment
of outstanding dues to the growers and requested
for extension of date of payment.
The meeting was also informed that 0.3 metric
tones of sugar has already been procured by TCP
and decided that the TCP would further procure up
to 0.3 metric tons of sugar through an open
tender.
It was decided in the meeting that TCP would make
70 percent payments to the PSMA, which was linked
with making outstanding dues to the growers by the
PSMA.
