MULTAN,April 01: Arshad Hashmi, manager
agribusiness at the Small and Medium Enterprise
Develop-ment Authority (SMEDA), said here
Wednesday that the authority was making efforts to
develop mango-farming industry along modern lines.
He was addressing a one-day awareness workshop on
Agro Food Processing, which was held at the
Central Cotton Research Institute, Multan,
organized by SMEDA in collaboration with Mango
Growers Association (MGA). The workshop was
attended by large number of mango growers,
agriculture scientists and other officials.
Mr Hashmi briefed the participants about the role
of SMEDA in promoting economy of Pakistan. He said
SMEDA would work closely with MGA to develop
mango-farming along modern lines and added that
the authority would also set up a regional
business center in Multan before June 30.
He said SMEDA has commenced a project to upgrade
ginning industry and has selected three ginning
factories in Multan, Bahawalpur and Rahim Yar
Khan, where the work has already begun.
Syed Zahid Hussain Gardezi, president of MGA,
stressed the need to develop polices which will be
instrumental to bring a major economic relief to
large agrarian population of Pakistan. He
underlined the need to intervene in marketing
distortions where growers are being deprived of
their earnings.
Mr Gardezi said lack of infrastructure and poor
coordination between researchers and growers and
weak horticulture services have contributed to
