Sindh objects to Punjab curb on wheat movement

KARACHI (April 22 2004): Sindh Food and Agriculture Minister Arif Mustafa Jatoi on Wednesday said that the imposition of Section 144 by Punjab government restricting movement of wheat would adversely affect the wheat market and create complications for other provinces.

He said, "The imposition of Section 144 is morally and legally wrong."

Jatoi said he has asked the federal government to intervene in this matter immediately and ensure implementation of the policies of the federal government by all provinces.

He said that it was the duty of the federal government to stabilise the market and to ensure uniform supply of wheat throughout the country.

He said that the procurement price, selling price, import and export policies were all decided by the federal government and it was, therefore, its duty to implement its own decisions.

He said that the action of Punjab government was against the guidelines given by the federal government in respect of wheat procurement and its movement.

Jatoi said, "Any unilateral actions by provinces can have negative effect on provincial harmony and integrity."

The minister termed Punjab government's action contrary to the policy of the federal government, which has clearly declared wheat as a freely moveable commodity.

In the light of the guidelines and policy formulated by the federal government, Sindh has adopted a free market policy, which is benefiting the farmers.
