Sindh cotton production target for 2003-04
raised
HYDERABAD (April 17
2004): Sindh Agriculture Department has enhanced
the provincial cotton production target fixed by
the Federal Committee on Agriculture at 2.4
million bales by 0.6 million bales for the year
2003-04 despite the fact that the cotton
production is continuously recording decline for
last two years.
According to agriculture experts the Sindh
Agriculture Department has set up an ambitious
production target without taking into account the
10 percent water shortage in provincial irrigation
network for last ten days which according to Irsa
will continue for another ten days during the
current month causing negative impact on cotton
sowing in lower Sindh especially in Tharparkar and
part of Sanghar districts.
According to Irsa sources the overall water
shortage during the early Kharif season would be
around ten percent but at later stage ie at the
time of fruiting period the shortage is expected
to be around 25 percent.
These sources attributed the cause of water
shortage to low temperature in northern areas.
The Cotton Action plan released by the Agriculture
Extension information wing has recommended the
cotton varieties for lower and upper Sindh in
addition to six-irrigation including soaking dose
besides fixing the area targets for every
cotton-growing district.
The cotton production statistic, released by the
cotton monitoring cell of Agriculture Extension,
indicated the seed cotton arrival at 2.2 million
bales including the cotton export to Punjab but
the Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association (PCGA) in
its latest figures revealed that till Saturday
last only 2.123 million bales of cotton have
arrived at ginneries posting a decline of 4.39
percent.
The cotton cultivation introduced in rice growing
districts of Larkana, Shikarpur and Jacobabad has
no visible signs of progress due to lack of
interest by the people on the helms of affairs
despite these districts have been provided cotton
seeds and agricultural implements at highly
subsidised rates.
The Agriculture Extension Information department
responsible for transfer of modern technology has
remained dormant.
