Punjab to evaluate research in agriculture
LAHORE (April 11 2004): Punjab Agriculture
Secretary Captain Arif Nadeem (Retd) called on
Punjab University Vice-Chancellor Arshad Mahmood
and discussed with him possibility of undertaking
research jointly by both the organisations.
The vice-chancellor apprised the secretary that
the university has developed hybrid seeds for
various crops and vegetables.
The university has also developed a fish farm, a
honeybee research farm and has cultivated variety
of vegetables on its farms. The university is also
conducting research on Sheesham and working on
revival of disease-affected trees and plants, he
added.
The university would launch agriculture management
classes with effect from September 2004, to
produce agriculture managers who are direly needed
in the field.
Arif Nadeem said the Agriculture Department
desired to collaborate with the Punjab University
to take benefit from the expertise of the
university scientists.
"The Punjab government is planning to form a body
of scientists to evaluate research in
agriculture," he added.
Both, the secretary and vice-chancellor agreed
that the Agriculture Department and the Punjab
University would jointly conduct research to find
solutions to the agricultural issues and the
problems being faced by the farmers.
They also agreed that the university would arrange
seminars for farmers in small groups, to create
awareness among them about their problems.
