Punjab to buy wheat on support price at Rs 350
per 40-kg
FAISALABAD (April 21
2004): The Punjab government would purchase each
and every grain of wheat on supporting price and
for this purpose Punjab Chief Minister Chaudhry
Parvaiz Elahi had earmarked a huge amount so that
a better return could be given to farmers by
paying them Rs 350 per 40-kg wheat.
This was stated by Punjab Communication and Works
Minister Ch Muhammad Zaheeruddin Khan, while
addressing the farmers of the area during the
inspection of a wheat procurement center at
Jaranwala.

Ahmad, former MPA Nawab Sher Waseer, Market
Committee Chairman Haji Inayat Ali, Union Nazim,
farmers and elite of the town were also present on
the occasion.
The provincial minister said the Punjab chief
minister had a great love and sympathy with the
farming community, who wanted to do a lot for
their prosperity and well-being, adding the chief
minister from the very first day of assuming his
office had launched revolutionary reforms for the
promotion of the agricultural sector by declaring
relaxation in agricultural income tax on the land
up to 12 1/2 acre instead of five acres,
decreasing the rate of interest up to four percent
on agricultural loans, distributing agricultural
land among landless farmers, fixing flat water
rates, and charging half water rate of the lands
situated at tails areas and taking various other
farmers-friendly decision were the self-speaking
revolutionary steps.
Zaheeruddin said the other provinces were also
adopting the revolutionary programmes of the
Punjab government as a role model made in
agricultural, educational, health and other
sectors, adding these steps of the Punjab
government were in continuation of the
developmental, economic and welfare policies,
which had been introduced for the progress and
prosperity of the country as well as for the
nation.
The minister appreciated the efforts made by
Tehsil Nazim which he made in connection with the
development of Jaranwala sub-division and advised
the farmers that in case of any problem relating
to the sale of wheat, canal water or agricultural
activities they should immediately bring it into
his notice so that steps could be taken for their
solution.
Tehsil Nazim Abdul Rehman Rana, lauding the
excellent policies of the Punjab government, which
it had made for the promotion of the agricultural
sector, said by making fool-proof arrangements for
the timely procurement of wheat the
farmers-friendly sentiments of the government had
been expressed.
Food Deputy Director Rana Saeed Ahmad Khan said
every possible facility was being provided to the
farmers in connection with the procurement of
wheat, adding during last year, 378,000 tonnes of
wheat was purchased from this region against the
fixed target of 350,000 tonnes.
He said that a target for procuring 0.5 million
tonnes of wheat had been fixed for Faisalabad
region during the current season, which would be
achieved by the grace of Almighty Allah by putting
in sincere and untiring efforts.
Rana Seed said it was in the best interest of the
farmers to sell their wheat to the food
department.
Earlier, DFC Haflz Muhammad Ahmad briefed the
minister and farmers about the arrangements made
by the food department in connection with the
wheat procurement campaign.
