Punjab sets 3.5 million tonnes wheat target
LAHORE (April 16
2004): Punjab government has set 3.5 million
tonnes wheat purchase target for current year and
for this purpose Rs 34 billion have been obtained
from a consortium of national banks.
The consortium is comprised of National Bank of
Pakistan (NBP) and United Bank Limited (UBL).
The government in association with agriculture and
food departments has established some 307 purchase
centres throughout the province where 1.40 lakh
gunny bags are being provided to farmers.
According to food department sources, 0.52 million
tonnes will be bought at wheat purchase centres
set up in Faisalabad district, same quantity will
be purchased at Bahawalpur district, DG Khan 0.42
million tonnes, Lahore district 0.37 million
tonnes, Sargodha district 0.298 million tonnes,
Gujranwala 0.25 million tonnes and in Rawalpindi
district 50,000 million tonnes will be bought.
Sources said wheat purchase process will be
commenced from April 26.
Meanwhile, this year Passco has fixed 1.2 million
tonnes wheat-buying target. In the first phase
0.75 million tonnes wheat will be purchased. As
many as 386 wheat purchase centres have been set
up by the Passco. The present figure is almost
double of the last year's figure.
According to food department, this year 16.5
million tonnes wheat production is expected
against the last year's 14.7 million tonnes.
