PSC approves four new cotton seed varieties
LAHORE (April 10 2004): Punjab Minister for
Agriculture, Muhammad Arshad Khan Lodhi, on Friday
said that Punjab Seed Council (PSC) has approved
four new high yielding, virus resistant and early
sowing cotton seed varieties, which would increase
per acre yield of the farmers.
Talking to mediamen after the 29th meeting of the
Punjab Seed Council, Lodhi said: We are giving
full concentration to gear up the research system
in order to evolve short duration varieties of
cotton seed which may be helpful to get cultivated
wheat crop well in time.
He further said that new four cotton seed
varieties would not only ensure better per acre
yield but also produce fine quality fibre to fetch
higher rates from local and world market.
He added that the most notable character of these
varieties is related to their resistance against
pest and disease attack as well as tolerant
against heat and drought.
He stated that two varieties of Central Cotton
Research Institute Multan, titled CIM-707 and
CIM-506 and one variety namely NIAB-111 of Nuclear
Institute of Biology and Agriculture, Faisalabad
are suitable to cultivate through out Punjab
province.
Fourth variety BH-160 evolved by the experts of
Cotton Research Station, Bahawalpur is not
suitable for sowing in Bahawalpur and D.G. Khan
districts.
He praised the scientists who evolved these higher
potential cottonseed varieties.
