President takes note of ban on wheat movement
ISLAMABAD (April 29
2004): Taking serious notice of rejection of
Australian wheat and imposition of ban on
inter-provincial transportation of wheat by Punjab
and Sindh, President Pervez Musharraf called the
minister of state for food and agriculture
Sikandar Bosan and directed him to take immediate
steps to resolve the crisis.
Sources said here on Wednesday that the President
viewed the ban as a "serious blow" to national
harmony. "This is really threatening the peaceful
coexistence of federating units," he said.
Sources said that the President may directly ask
Punjab and Sindh governments to lift ban on
inter-provincial movement "very shortly", as the
two federating units have so far been defiant of
earlier pleas made by the federal government.
Bosan was not available for comment when this
scribe tried to contact him on phone. However,
sources said that to exert more pressure on Punjab
and Sindh governments, the officials in the food
ministry and representatives of the flour mills
were eager to seek President's help in the matter.
To reach an amicable solution, the federal
government is also likely to convene a meeting of
provincial food ministers shortly.
According to sources, the food ministry has
submitted its report on the findings of the
meeting of the Wheat Monitoring Committee to Yar
Muhammad Rind. The minister will submit the report
to the Prime Minister Secretariat on Thursday,
sources said.
Punjab and Sindh representatives are of the view
that ban on wheat movement was imposed as part of
administrative steps to meet the food security
target of 3.5 million tons set by federal
government.
